Belize  followed Costa Rica in following the path of sustainable development.

Having the second longest barrier reef in the world small hotels  were started in the out islands called Cayes. Ambergris Caye is now heavily developed and is not our first choice for a destination.

We particularly like a small town called Hopkins on the mainland which offers great a great beach,  some fabulous  estuary/mangrove trips and small deserted   reef islands where rare  boobie  birds nest.  Hopkins is also a great way to see great jungle sites  like  the nearby Jaguar Preserve,  underground river tubing and nearby Mayan ruins. Hopkins is a cute town  and made up of the Garufina people, descendants of runaway slaves and the indigenous people.

Some really great eco friendly lodges here are Hamanasi and Almond Beach/Jaguar Reef.

Caves Branch Adventure Lodge ( pictured)  is a great place also for eco friendly trips

Placencia is a eco friendly town too  with some cool lodges
In the interior near San Ignacio town  are a number of great eco lodges. A few we suggest are Cahal Pech, Chaa Creek, DuPlooy's . From here  you can take a overnight trip to visit the fabulous ruins in Tikal, Guatemala. If you choose, the Jungle Lodge at the entrance to  Tikal is a great eco lodge to spend the night.   Expect the howler monkeys  to wake you at 4 am

All the lodges mentioned  are gay friendly too
We would be happy to help you prepare a great itinerary based in your budget.
